KANEKO, the venue at which we held Big Omaha last year, will kick off its Great Minds Series tonight at 7 p.m. with a presentation by Sheryl WuDunn, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and co-author of Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide. Published September 2009 and already in its second week on a New York Times Bestsellers list, Half the Sky is described as a 21st century manifesto on human rights.
The co-author of the book, WuDunn’s husband Nicholas Kristof, will also be gracing KANEKO’s presentation space, the Bow Truss room, this coming November when he will discuss “(Un)Covering Human Crises: Crucial Dispatches from the Innovative Journalist.”
Tonight’s event will also feature Sweeta Noori, Afghanistan Country Director for Women for Women International, one of the organizations highlighted in Half the Sky. Following WuDunn’s presentation, audience Q&A will be moderated by Carol Kloss of KETV.
Unfortunately, I won’t be able to make this event as I’ll be at tonight’s Midlands Venture Forum event — I wish the times didn’t overlap! If your schedule is open, I strongly encourage you to check it out. The folks at KANEKO are committed to bringing thought-provoking and renowned speakers into our city. You might remember, they brought Sir Ken Robinson in this past February for an excellent talk on arts in education.
Thanks to our sponsor
I know Sir Ken’s talk at TED, one of the most watched TED videos, really piqued the interest of many in Omaha, like myself. Although I don’t have a TED talk to share, I think you’ll enjoy this clip of WuDunn on a recent episode of The Colbert Report.
