July’s Cornstalks, an Omaha Chamber-hosted meetup for aspiring and current high-growth entrepreneurs, featured Nebraska State Senator Heath Mello speaking about entrepreneurship, innovation, and economic development.

Mello’s opening remarks, which are featured in the seven minute video below, focused on efforts to grow Nebraska’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. He said:

There’s a lot of people who don’t know what’s going on, unfortunately, and it’s going to be up to everyone here as well as everyone you know to try to preach the “gospel” of what’s changing and how the economy is changing to support more entrepreneurs, and what innovation is available for people who want to start a business.

To keep the Cornstalks Q&A lively, it’s our protocol to stop recording after the speakers opening remarks. To take part in Q&A, you’ll need to attend a future Cornstalks in-person. The next one will be held next Thursday, September 30. Look for an announcement post next week.

Here’s an outline of Mello’s talk:

  • 00:40 – His personal interest in entrepreneurship
  • 02:42 – Where the State Legislature is with entrepreneurship programs
  • 04:00 – Update of LB 1109 – Adopt the Nebraska Innovation and High Wage Employment Act
  • 05:10 – Nebraska’s entrepreneurial ecosystem
