Omaha 10-10-10 conference, a ‘rest stop’ in the 21st Century

October 7, 2010 by

Kicking off this Saturday, October 9, and running through Monday, October 11, Omaha 10-10-10 is a three-day conference promoting collaboration between professionals and academics interested in social media and technology.

“We started about three years ago with a simple idea: October 10, 2010, 10-10-10, could be a rest stop on the way to the second decade of the 21st Century,” said conference lead organizer Jeremy Lipschultz, PhD, director and professor of University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) School of Communication, in an email interview.

In all, nearly 30 speakers will take the stage, including Silicon Prairie News’ own Dusty Davidson and Jeff Slobotski speaking about social media and business with regards to putting on Big Omaha. Other notable speakers include Craig Newmark, founder of Craigslist, and Scott Heiferman, co-founder of Meetup, who will deliver their presentations by video webcast. Rick Murray, president of Chicago-based Edelman Digital, will be giving a keynote presentation Sunday evening at the Omaha Press Club.

The conference is open to the general public and outside of three events – $10 Saturday morning continental breakfast, $25 Sunday night Omaha Press Club dinner, and $10 Monday lunch – it’s free to attend. Registration is located at Find the conference schedule and venue information at

To learn more about Omaha 10-10-10, we conducted an email interview with Lipschultz:

Silicon Prairie News: Who is the team organizing Omaha 10-10-10?

Jeremy Lipschultz, PhD: UNO public relations students worked with School of Communication faculty and experts from around the country.

This is the first year of Omaha 10-10-10, what’s the short backstory of putting this conference together?

We started about three years ago with a simple idea: October 10, 2010, 10-10-10, could be a rest stop on the way to the second decade of the 21st Century. We were informed by the past two New Media Academic Summits in Washington, D.C. and New York, as well as Big Omaha. We want to bring this energy to campus. This is a one-time event, although we plan to reconvene in the year 2020 to see how well we predicted the world a decade out.

Who is this conference for and what will it focus on?

UNO students, faculty and staff, community partners and others interested in the development of social media and technology.

Who are a few of its keynote speakers?

We’re very excited to have Kevin Torres and Misty Montano from Denver TV newsrooms, Edelman Chicago president Rick Murray, University of Oregon distinguished professor Kyu Ho Youm, as well as many local and regional innovators. We’re also using Skype and iChat video conferencing for conversations with Craig Newmark (Craigslist), Scott Heiferman ( and Melanie James (University of Newcastle) from Australia.

Anything else you’d like to add?

We’re also looking forward to hearing from Jeff Slobotski and Dusty Davidson about the next Big Omaha!
