Uppward, an iPhone app which rewards users for airline miles traveled and has the ability to connect users (airline travelers) with each other, released an update yesterday (Version 1.5) that aims to improve the latter of those services.

Called the “Radar” feature (left, screenshot from itunes.apple.com), Uppward co-founder Nathan T. Wright says the feature shows a snapshot of the most recent activity on the Uppward platform – “who is flying and where they are flying to, overlaid on a Google map.” It currently shows all public Uppward users’ activity.

“I get excited each time I look at it, because I love the visualization of all the activity. In the past we just relied on Twitter shouts and database dumps to figure out who was flying,” said Wright. “We’d like to evolve filters for this, so we could maybe show only activity among your Twitter friends, or a specific airline or location.”

As of a few days ago, Uppward users (minus the four co-founders and promo miles given out) had logged more than 90,000 miles. That’s about 40 round trip flights between Des Moines and Boston.

Tonight at 6 p.m. at Mars Cafe (2318 West University Avenue), both users and non-users are invited to learn more about the Radar feature and the rest of the app’s functionality at their first-ever Uppward Meetupp.

“The Uppward Meetupp will be a way for us to tell the story of where the idea came from, explain some of the features, and talk about what we’re building next,” said Wright. “We’ll also have free t-shirts for the first people who get there, and promo codes for extra Uppward miles!”
