Judges have whittled the list of companies competing in the John Pappajohn Iowa Business Plan Competition down to three finalists. M&S FlowMatics, Radiology Protocols and VSI Aerospace are the final companies in the mix for prizes of $25,000 (first place), $15,000 (second) and $10,000 (third) as part of the competition, which is designed to stimulate entrepreneurial activity and greater awareness of the resources available to grow entrepreneurs in Iowa.

The three companies’ places will be announced and each finalist will give a 15-minute pitches at a Nov. 16 luncheon. To reach this point, companies had to apply by April 30, submit a full plan by July 1 and survive two rounds of cuts. The list of initial entries was sliced to seven on Aug. 11, and those seven went through an additional interview process.

We’ll have more on the contest when final results are announced later this fall. But, in the meantime, a little additional background on the three finalists:

M&S FlowMatics, based in Ames, manufactures flow-metering equipment for granular products. Its founders have developed an inline, real-time meter which aims to eliminate interruption of flow and damage to product and be more accurate, self-cleaning, and affordable than alternatives.

Radiology Protocols, from Iowa City, is a user-driven web-based service dedicated to the advancement of medical imaging techniques. It seeks to offer imaging protocols and the tools to implement them effectively.

VSI Aerospace, located in Ames, specializes in software and hardware solutions for integrated design, optimization, instrumentation, modeling, control, and simulation of aerospace vehicles.
