For iPhone-toting Hudl users hoping to pass the time during lengthy pre-game bus rides or looking to squeeze some film study into the few fleeting moments between classes … well, now there’s an app for that.

Hudl, the Lincoln company that makes web-based video and analysis tools for sports coaches, today released its first iPhone app, which is available for free download in the app store. (Left: Screenshot of the app from itunes.apple.com.)

Although the app isn’t quite as robust as other Hudl offerings — not yet, at least — members of the team responsible for making it say it delivers on their goal of providing users quick and easy access to video clips.

“The main idea behind the app was just to focus on watching video,” Hudl software engineer Erik Person says in the video interview below, “just making it as fast and easy as possible to pull up a couple of plays that you want to watch.”

The process of viewing video is made easier by filtering tools, which enable users to sort clips into offense, defense and special teams and to sort them according to other data like down and distance.

“You can see a list of all the plays that are part of a playlist and scroll through them really fast and apply some really basic filters to take the set of video that, you know, is normally pretty large,” user experience manager Kyle Murphy says in a video interview below, “and bring it down to maybe five or 10 clips that you can watch really quickly in a really short set.”

Other highlights of the app include the ability for users to zoom in on video and to download clips to their phones for viewing when an internet connection isn’t available.

In the first video, Bryant Bone, Hudl’s coach support manager, illustrates how the new app works.

In the second video, Person, Murphy and Melissa Fabina, a quality assurance specialist for Hudl, talk about the vision for the app, discuss its user experience and offer tips for using it.
