AgLocal chosen for minority-focused San Francisco accelerator NewME

Add NewME to the list of noteworthy accelerators helping AgLocal ramp up to full speed.

Earlier this month, we touched base with Naithan Jones, the co-founder of Overland Park, Kan.-based startup AgLocal, which connects independent farmers and producers with the demand of local businesses and consumers. At last check, AgLocal had just been named one of 48 startups chosen to participate in the SXSW Interactive Accelerator, a two-day showcase in conjunction with South By Southwest Interactive in Austin, Texas.

Now, AgLocal has secured one of seven spots from a reported applicant pool of 300 for the second class at NewME, a San Francisco-based residential technology startup accelerator and incubator for businesses that are led by minorities under-represented in the technology industry. NewME’s 12-week program starts Monday.

NewME provides entrepreneurs with space to live and work for the duration of the program, plus a network of mentors and other resources. It takes a four-percent stake in companies in exchange.

Google is serving as the presenting sponsor of NewME for 2012, and NewME CEO Angela Benton said in a blog post that the accelerator counts notable figures like Eric Ries (“The Lean Startup” book), Eva Ho (exec at Factual) and Cory Ondrejka (co-founder of Linden Lab/Second Life) among the people in its network of mentors.

It’s no wonder, then, that the AgLocal team couldn’t contain its excitement when it learned of the selection.

For more on NewMe and its second class, see Benton’s blog post announcing the seven startups selected: “NewME Accelerator Updates and New Startup Founders Announced for 2012 Cycle One.” For additional information about AgLocal, see our story: “Meet AgLocal, the online market for local meat picked to pitch at SXSW.”
