The rumors were true. Google this morning unveiled plans to install its gigabit fiber service in Austin, Texas, come mid-2014. “We believe the Internet’s next chapter will be built on gigabit speeds, and we hope this new Google Fiber city will inspire communities across America to think about what ultrafast connectivity could mean for them,” Milo Medin, vice president of Google Fiber, said in a blog post. The service will offer options similar to those offered in Kansas City. – Source: Google Fiber

Hours later, AT&T announced it intends to build a fiber network in Austin, with the anticipation it “will be granted the same terms and conditions as Google,” according to a company statement. — Source: AT&T
