With Opening Day just days away, Major League Baseball called on a Midwest design firm last Friday to create an infographic that would celebrate baseball’s big day.

“The challenge was could we turn around an infographic by Tuesday afternoon even though we wouldn’t get the data until Tuesday morning,” Lemonly founder John Meyer (right) said today in an email. “We said yes!”

Lemonly got connected with MLB through the referral of one of its New York clients. The Sioux Falls, S.D. firm, which came about in 2011, has done work for Nike, Toyota and PepsiCo.

“Basically, what we created is an infographic look at all the social chatter and activity during MLB’s Opening Day,” Meyer said. The infographic presents data, which was provided by MLB, on the Twitter and Instagram hashtag #OpeningDay. It also highlights Facebook conversations and checkins at the league’s ballparks.

Meyer, who’s a big baseball fan, has created a new brand, Statographics, for his company’s sports-focused infographics. It’s showcasing that work along with the work of others on a Tumblr site, statographics.tumblr.com.
