AlphaBrawl is Hatchlings first venture into mobile games.

The Hatchlings team last November headed to Startup Weekend Des Moines as a team building exercise of sorts. The result of their 48 hours of work, originally called BattleType, won second place at the event.

More than six months later, the team is preparing to launch its first iOS and Android app, now called AlphaBrawl. Hatchlings creator Brad Dwyer this morning spoke at 1 Million Cups – Des Moines about the game and the challenges his team has faced in building it and reallocating their time.

Founded in 2008, Des Moines-based Hatchlings has become a widely successful Facebook game with more than 250,000 active users. Though Hatchlings 2 launched last year, the 11-person team had not developed any new, unrelated products since the game’s inception.

AlphaBrawl, which the team hopes to launch July 1 in both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, is billed as an “anti-word game.” Players put letters together with the objective of not forming a word, and attempt to trick their opponent into losing by completing the word themselves.
