Omaha’s Warren Buffett answers a question during a live video event with Fortune magazine.

Social media news isn’t a norm on SPN, but when Nebraska’s best-known resident joins Twitter, it becomes news, at least for Fortune, the Wall Street Journal, The Chicago Tribune and of course, Mashable, among others.

Warren Buffett this morning signed up for Twitter, and during a live video chat with Fortune at the University of Nebraska Omaha, he sent his first tweet:

When Fortune’s Patricia Sellers asked Buffett if he understood Twitter, he said “so-so,” according to Mashable. But the billionaire investor noted, “the co-founder (Ev Williams) came from Nebraska so it can’t be all bad.”

Buffett’s emergence on Twitter comes a day before the start of Berkshire Hathaway’s Annual Meeting.

Here’s what Erik Holm and Anupreeta Das of the Wall Street Journal had to say about Buffett’s online activity:

Buffett’s foray into the Twittersphere is notable in part because of his professed aversion to technology. He once said he missed a message about a potential deal to bail out Lehman Bros. before it collapsed because he didn’t know how to check the voicemail on his cell phone. For years, he repeatedly declined Gates’ attempts to send someone over to set up a computer in his home. And he still doesn’t have a computer on his desk at his office.

Buffett’s Twitter handle is @WarrenBuffett and as of 12:15 p.m. today, he had more than 50,000 followers.
