The team at Health Tech Hatch is using its product’s crowdsourcing and testing capabilities to help facilitate a programming challenge to give patients more access to their clinical data.

Sponsored by the Department of Health and Human Services through the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, the Blue Button Co-Design Challenge is designed to help increase the number of Blue Button Plus apps that allow patients to receive this important data.

The Iowa City-based company launched last October and since has worked to change the way health care products and apps are released to market. Entrepreneurs focused on health and wellness products can log on to the site and use its features for testing and to crowdsource funding for their projects.

“Supporting innovations that will actually be used by people to improve health is a shared mission among Hatch and [the Department of Health and Human Services/the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology], and is the inspiration behind Hatch’s testing platform,” said Patricia Salber, Health Tech Hatch CEO and co-founder, in a press release.

A total of $50,000 is available in prizes for winners of the contest, and entries for patient application ideas may be submitted through Friday, June 7. Application idea winners will be announced June 12, which will set up a pool of patient applications with a deadline of August 5. Winners will be announced September 16-20.
