We so often hear of the incredible good that comes from relationships built on the Silicon Prairie. Sometimes in companies being formed, others in the form of momentum for the region. Last week we learned of another small but meaningful story.

Tyler Riewer, content strategist at charity: water in New York City, reached out to 14 designers, including Justin Kemerling, chief design officer at Omaha-based community engagement startup MindMixer, for a project. The two were friends at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln as they sought a bachelor’s in mass communications and journalism and remained in touch.

Riewer was looking for volunteers to give their time and talent by designing a poster for the charity’s September campaign, which has a $2 million goal for 100 projects to provide clean water for remote communities in India. Kemerling was thrilled to help, and after receiving an inspirational story provided by charity: water, decided to base his design on the “untouchables” of the country’s caste system.

“charity: water does great work, so it feels really good to be involved,” Kemerling (left) told Silicon Prairie News. “And I’m particularly fond of poster projects.”

In addition to his duties at MindMixer, Kemerling continues to work on other design projects when opportunities arise. In the past, he’s volunteered to create illustrations for Nebraska Appleseed, a “nonprofit, nonpartisan public interest law firm that works for equal justice and full opportunity for all Nebraskans,” according to his personal website.

You can donate to charity: water’s September campaign in a number of ways, including buying Justin’s poster, purchasing one of the 13 others or through a direct donation. A limited run of 50 copies of each poster will be printed.
