She’s an acclaimed author and award-winning researcher with a Ph.D. in neuroscience.

She also is a self-proclaimed geek who shamelessly shares her love of Zelda and photos of her “insanely adorable” mini-labradoodle (and pics of her with Michelle Obama and LeBron James, all within the month of February).

Equal parts intellectual and lighthearted, scholarly and whimsical, Darya Rose’s ability to find this balance has resulted in an extraordinary life, both inside and outside of her career.

Throughout her years in academia, Rose strived toward the goal of discovering ways to curb diseases that plague modern society. While she assumed this drive would lead her to the medical field, after years of study, she found herself with a different focus: food.

She has a long and complicated diet history, beginning with her first SlimFast shake at age 11. Over the next decade and a half, she cycled through a number of diets. And while she never found dieting difficult, her relationship with food was closer to a fight than the loving embrace she desired. But soon she discovered it was possible through combining real food with her academic research.

A year before she graduated with her Ph.D. from UC San Francisco, she created the website Summer Tomato. Focused on health, food and the science behind it all, she decided to make it her career post-graduation. Over the past five years, Summer Tomato has amassed an army of followers looking to it for daily advice. Its success has led it to being named one of TIME’s 50 best websites in 2011. Additionally, Summer Tomato has been featured in The New York Times, Oprah Magazine and other well-known publications.

Her work with Summer Tomato provided the basis of her 2013 book, “Foodist.” Praised by NYT best-selling author Tim Ferris and Naked Chef Jamie Oliver, Foodist empowers readers by giving them insight on how to take control of their health through leveraging the power of “real food and real science.”

In the same year that she released her book, she married Digg founder and Google Ventures partner Kevin Rose. The couple, who live in San Francisco, was named one of the 10 most powerful couples in tech by Mashable. In May, they will both venture to the Midwest to share their stories with Big Omaha attendees.

We invite you to join Darya, Kevin and the other 13 dynamic speakers at Big Omaha from May 7-9 at KANEKO. Reserve your spot today, and grab your ticket at BigOmaha.com.

Help us welcome Darya Rose on Twitter at @summertomato.
