Base 3 helps spark entrepreneurial energy in northwest Iowa community

Sioux City, Iowa, might not be an expected place for a thriving entrepreneurial community, but RXA Technology—a mobile development company based in the city—is helping foster just that through a one-night event.

Sioux City, Iowa, might not be an expected place for a thriving entrepreneurial community, but RXA Technology—a mobile development company based in the city—is helping foster just that through a one-night event.

The gathering, called Base 3, brings together three speakers from various fields with community members to help the city cultivate a passion for entrepreneurship and innovation.

Speakers for this month’s event are Tina Beal, owner of branding and marketing firm Social Bug; Scott Conley, managing partner of application development studio Flipstone; and Alex Altomare, co-founder of BetaBlox and founder of The Lean Lab. Previous speakers have included Flywheel’s Rick Knudtson and Lemonly’s John Meyer.

The third iteration of Base 3 will have a summer camp theme and be held Thursday, July 17 5–8 p.m. at the Ho Chunk Centre, 600 4th St., in Sioux City. Tickets for the event are free and can be reserved online.

In anticipation of the event, we asked Base 3’s team a few questions about the event and the entrepreneurial community in Sioux City.

Silicon Prairie News: Tell us a little about the event. What is Base 3?

Sean Richardson: Base 3 is a one-night entrepreneurial speaking event with talks covering the topics of accelerators, branding, creating a makers space, being a female entrepreneur and the benefits of being a mentor. Base 3 will take place on July 17 on the 8th floor of the Ho Chunk Centre and will kick off with a Biz Brew, an informal gathering aimed at promoting new and emerging businesses in Sioux City.

Ryan Martinez: Base 3 is one night full of entrepreneurial and inspirational talks. Three diverse speakers from around the U.S. share their stories on how they have achieved their rank in today’s society.

SPN: This lineup of speakers has fairly diverse backgrounds. What’s the process of choosing them?

Blake Anderson: We look for impressive people. Whether it’s people we have met, heard about or are referred to us. We then make sure they fit the event, can provide value and then we reach out to them. We’re really excited to have this event’s lineup and we really appreciate all the speakers Base 3 has had so far.

SPN: What can first-time attendees expect?

RM: First-time attendees at Base 3 need to expect an experience from the moment they step into the room to the time they walk out. Our goal as the Base 3 team is to give the best user experience possible through the pairing of dynamic speakers and an awe-inspiring setting.

SPN: Why Sioux City? Give us a feel for the community there.

SR: Sioux City is a great place to be, the community is rallying behind the Sioux City startup movement, and it’s shown by their support in Base 3. The Sioux City startup scene is really starting to pick up steam (we created a SlideShare on why you should start your startup in Sioux City). An exciting startup week, Launch Week, is coming back to Sioux City during the week of Sept. 8. Launch Week will be kicked off with Startup Weekend Sioux City starting on Sept. 5. With everything going on in Sioux City, the Base 3 team feels honored to be a part of this movement. At Base 3, you will meet a diverse audience—from successful startup entrepreneurs to community leaders and college students. The support from the community has made planning and hosting a new Base 3 in Sioux City so exciting for our team.

SPN: What’s one thing people may not know about Base 3?

BA: Base 3 was created by a college student and a recent college grad.

RM: Base 3 is not limited to entrepreneurs. Everyone is unique in their own way. Base 3 is for anyone with an idea, regardless of age, gender or occupation.
