FNBO Code One Hackathon

First National Bank of Omaha is hosting its second hackathon Sept. 12-14 with more than $17,000 in prizes and raffles up for grabs.

Teams of three, including developers, designers and idea people, will compete to create an HTML 5 web-based tool or application solution for a problem that will be announced just before the hackathon starts on Sept. 12.

The 48-hour hackathon will be in the First National Bank Tower Wintergarden, the closed atrium that typically serves as an eating and meeting place for bank employees.

Meals, snacks and energy drinks will be catered on site during the 48 hours.

Organizers suggest developers use .NET, PHP, Python or Java-based languages. They don’t allow use of Flash, ActiveX or Silverlight. Organizers will provide stock images, CSS style sheets and logos so that solutions can be implemented with consistency and provide a similar look and feel.

Participants must provide their own devices and tools.

First place takes home $7,500, second $5,000, third $2,500 and audience choice $2,000. Raffle prizes include an iPad, gift cards, headphones and more.

Last year 12 teams sought to create a way for FNBO customers to share ideas and feedback. The winning team created a reddit-like up-voting system.

“All of last year’s projects gave us great prospective into several different options,” said Michael Vandevoort of FNBO, that organizes the event. “As a result, a project and team are in the works to integrate a complete solution. We want the complete solution to integrate on the web and on our mobile platform… it’s a roadmap for us in 2015.”

Two individuals who participated in the hackathon were hired because of their work, Vandevoort said.

First National Bank has sponsored Straight Shot accelerator and Interface Web School with scholarship dollars and internship opportunities for students.
