KANSAS CITY—For the second year, high school and college students will descend on the Kansas City Startup Village for the MECA Challenge.
The competition groups students into teams to solve real business problems posed by KC startups.
Beginning the evening on Thursday, Oct. 2, students will partner with local startups to dip their toes into what it’s like to work for a startup. The Challenge continues during the day on Saturday, Oct. 4 and Sunday, Oct. 5, with final presentations beginning at 12:30 p.m. to see what students created over the course of the weekend.

“Though the MECA Challenge was initially designed for students to get experience in solving real-world business problems, we benefitted greatly from our involvement as a company in the competition as well,” Brittain Kovac of HostelKC said in a release. “Sometimes you need a fresh look into how you’re doing things, and that’s exactly what the students gave: new ideas and innovative ways to connect with our customers.”
This year the MECA Challenge, supported by Affinity Enterprise Group and the Kauffman Foundation, will be held at the Sprint Accelerator in the Crossroads, and partner 64 students with eight local startups, doubling the participation from last year.
