Paul Singh of Results Junkies spoke at Big Omaha 2016 about his start with America Online, his development as a venture capitalist with 500 Startups, and the re-imagining of Crystal City as a startup community in Washington, D.C. He also discussed the rise of subscription-based SaaS services, the mobile revolution, and the “dirty secret” of venture capital today.

“It’s the thing nobody ever talks about,” said Singh. “It turns out we don’t really need to look at your pitch deck anymore. What we’re looking to figure out is where you are at in relation to your competitors.”

If you’re starting a B2B or B2C company, investors can look at Compete and Alexa to get a rough idea of where your competitors are.

“If you’re not spending eighty percent of your time talking about you’re going to beat those numbers, I can’t invest,” said Singh.
