A strong tech ecosystem starts with strong talent, including leadership talent. But as today’s IT managers increasingly deal with the challenges of global competition and a changing workforce, effective management and leadership skills are needed more than ever.

That’s why AIM and its local business members have collaborated to create an annual IT Leadership Academy.

AIM IT Leadership Academy (AITLA) is an annual management course for IT professionals with a goal of helping IT managers develop and enhance their leadership skills to more fully leverage the talents and contributions of the local IT workforce.

AIM says the vision of AITLA is “for IT managers from companies across Omaha and the surrounding area to develop state-of-the-art management and leadership skills, yielding a highly engaged and effective IT workforce and unparalleled success in our competitive global marketplace.”

AITLA program structure

The program consists of one, full-day of training each month for seven months from October 2018 to May 2019. Each session will focus on a common on-the-job issue faced by IT managers.

Participants are required to attend at least six of the seven sessions to complete the IT Leadership Academy and are also encouraged to attend a two-hour orientation in October.

The seven sessions and covered curriculum are currently as scheduled:

  • SESSION 1: LEADERSHIP & TEAMS, November TBD
    Although we recognize the need for individual expertise, the use of highly effective teams is becoming more prevalent in the workplace. Learn to lead more authentically, capitalizing on your own personal style.
  • SESSION 2: STRATEGIC PLANNING, December TBD
    Learn more about creating a clear vision for IT, marketing IT, measuring success within IT and prioritizing the highest value IT projects. This will be a customer-focused session, teaching IT managers practical applications of how to align business and organization strategies.
  • SESSION 3: CREATIVITY & INNOVATION, January TBD
    As more businesses recognize the essential role of creativity in the workplace, learn how to create an environment that encourages creativity to increase innovation and promote intraprenaurship. Learn how to change your organization’s culture and foster your employees’ creativity, all while balancing risk and stability.
  • SESSION 4: SELF-MANAGEMENT & EMPOWERMENT, February TBD
    Today’s companies must increasingly accommodate a diverse, global workforce. As a result, cultural differences to which managers need to be sensitive. How do you all work together to achieve that common goal? Managers are challenged to maintain performance under what at times are chaotic conditions.
  • SESSION 5: SERVANT LEADERSHIP & COMMUNICATION SKILLS, March TBD
    Working to empower and serve the people you lead is the main concept behind Servant Leadership. Challenge them to go farther, reach higher, innovate and have fun doing it requires leadership skills that are beyond the traditional “Command and Control” style of management.
  • SESSION 6: TRENDS IN BUSINESS & IT / CIO PERSPECTIVES, April TBD
    Participants will be able to demonstrate their communication skills and knowledge while presenting on a key business or IT trend impacting their organizations. A panel of top local CIOs will share insights about their real-world experiences and other core leadership fundamentals and engage questions from the class.
  • SESSION 7: REALITY BASED LEADERSHIP, May TBD
    The final session of self-reflection explores qualities of risk-taking, flexibility, self-motivation and placement of team before self. You will learn to say no, manage conflicting priorities, macro-manage instead of micro-manage and balance management versus technical skills.

Enrollment is limited

A limited number of applicants will be accepted from individuals working in Omaha and the surrounding area. A Selection Committee selects participants based on the information provided on their application form, and criteria for selection includes leadership potential, motivation, ability to identify and meet IT challenges and interest in the program.

The application deadline for the 2018-2019 session is September 10. Applicants will be notified of their selection into the IT Leadership Academy by September 17, 2018. Applicants are encouraged to reapply the following year if they are not selected.

Tuition and additional information

Fees include all materials, Emergenetics Profile®, meals, refreshments, local and national speakers, access to unique leadership development activities and ongoing support that will lead to both substantive personal growth and a measurable impact on the sponsoring company.

  • Corporate Participants – AIM Members: $3,500
  • Corporate Participants – Non-AIM Members: $3,750
  • Government, Education, Nonprofit Participants and Small Businesses (30 employees or less): $2,500
