In doing research for the Annual Report, Silicon Prairie News compiled corporate and university patent holders in each MSA. This led us to the discovery that there were a ton of innovative companies in the Midwest. Unfortunately, many in our region don’t know that these companies are doing so much research and are so innovative.

Below are companies that were recognized in our research as having a high number of patents.  [We did not include universities in this list, although the University of Wisconsin, the University of Illinois, and the University of Kansas were leading patent holders in their communities.]

10. West Corporation – Omaha
9. Deere – Fargo, Davenport, and Waterloo
8. Boeing – St. Louis and Wichita
7. IBM – Rochester, Minnesota
6. Pioneer – Des Moines and Manhattan
5. Sprint – Kansas City
4. Rockwell Collins – Cedar Rapids and Milwaukee
3. Honeywell UOP – Chicago
2. Hamilton Sunstrand – Rockford
1. Caterpillar – Peoria
