Thinking about updating your paint colors or flooring?

Can’t decide among all the hues of blue or the shades of chartreuse? In a quandary over terracotta tiles or luxury laminates? Cambrian may be the solution to your renovation ruminations.

Cambrian co-founder, Heather Spalding, is a 2019 Pipeline Fellow. She and her co-founder and husband Joel Spalding started Cambrian in 2011. Together, they have created an augmented reality mobile application for the home improvement industry and DIY enthusiasts of the world.

Cambrian’s technology is built to create a realistic representation of a space that a user is seeking to improve with a new paint color or new flooring. Using Cambrian’s app couldn’t be simpler – a touch of the screen can virtually change your wall color from eggshell to eggplant in an instant.

The technology interface uses AI and computer vision to capture the boundaries of a space, while the “smart paint brush” colors in the area. If it’s new hardwood you’re pining for, use the app while you walk around the space to check out flooring options of numerous varieties. The app can also apply or change wallpaper. In addition, the Cambrian technology preserves the aspects of a space such as shadows and can recreate the lighting for a realistic rendering. The app recognizes and isolates objects and furniture. Cool – no virtual paint splashes on your new sofa. Users can save and store their selections on the app.

Cambrian initially began as an app called WallPainter using an algorithm the co-founders developed to find walls and surfaces. Heather and Joel recalled that the app attracted 12 users the night it first launched. Heather and Joel were delighted to see that number climb to 12,000 – the very next day. They were quickly approached by companies around the world to sell or license their software. The app evolved to live augmented reality, and Cambrian as a company was born.

Cambrian soon licensed the software to Home Depot and added augmented reality to virtually change flooring in addition to paint colors. Cambrian continues to evolve and grow since its founding, and the founders have their sights set on even more options for their customers.

“We’re focusing our attention on continued development and refinement of our technology, and as our platform becomes more sophisticated, we are defining lots of solutions and applications in real estate and architecture,” said Heather. “We’re eliminating so much of the guesswork that has traditionally accompanied renovations, not to mention the time and cost savings Cambrian brings to its users. Whether you’re an architect or a homeowner, Cambrian’s technology is the solution to the very limited selection of swatches and samples you’d find in your local hardware or chain store. Cambrian gives you an array of options that is as wide as your imagination – at your fingertips.”

Joel added, “As our customer base grows, so too does the demand for options in addition to paint and flooring, such as countertops and backsplash features. We’re working to respond to that demand as we grow Cambrian and continue to develop our platform.”
