My mom always had her work cut out for her in our household of six growing up – especially when it came time for dinner.

It was not a rare occurrence for my mom to forget to go to the store for groceries or simply have a case of the notorious “lazies”. Not much has changed since that time either. As a result, some nights she would brag about how hard she had to work to heat up our frozen pizza main course. Although my brothers and I never really complained, it dawned on me recently just how many frozen pizzas we must have gone through as children, but more importantly, how crappy that must have been for our bodies.

Chicago-based company Nurture Life has an innovative solution that aims to answer the dinner prayers of moms and dads around the Midwest. In early May, Nurture Life announced that it received $6.88 million in funding. The funding was led by IrishAngels, an early-stage venture firm that aims to invest early in high potential startups throughout the U.S. The IrishAngels network is currently involved in 64 investments.

Nurture Life is a subscription-based meal delivery service focused specifically on children from the ages of six months to 18 years. Their primary goal is to provide parents with pre-made, pediatric dietitian-approved meals that ready in three minutes or less.

So how does it work? Start by choosing a plan that is right for your child’s age and dietary preference. Next, Nurture Life’s chefs will cook and ship your meal cold and directly to your doorstep. When it is time for dinner, simply reheat in the microwave or oven and enjoy! Meals start at $4.38 per meal for babies and $12.40 per meal for teenagers. There is no commitment so you can get your meals when it is convenient or cancel at any time.

Nurture Life was founded in 2015 by Jennifer Chow and Steven Minisini. They came up with the idea for the company through their son James. With their demanding job in San Francisco’s tech industry, they were determined to find a better solution to healthy meal-prepping for her child, which is when Nature Life began to take shape.

“We initially self-funded Nurture Life. We chose this direction because we had a very clear vision for Nurture Life – we still do – and wanted to ensure we could bring the business to life staying true to the vision.” said Jennifer Chow in Entrepreneurial Chef magazine.[1]

Although highly innovative, Nurture Life does have competition in the health-focused meal-deliver market. Nurture Life’s biggest competitor is a company named Little Spoon which was founded in 2017. However, Little Spoon only produces organic baby food.
