1 Million Cups was developed in Kansas City, MO in 2012 by Co-Founders Cameron Cushman and Nate Olson who were working at the time on the Entrepreneurship Team at the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. What began as an experiment to bring entrepreneurs in one city together over a cup of coffee towards a goal of 1 million cups and corresponding encounters, has grown into a national movement. 1 Million Cups events to build local entrepreneurial networks are now being held in over 180 cities in the US.
The meetings are run by a dedicated group of entrepreneurs from each local community who volunteer their time and resources to the program. Participation is free. On Wednesday mornings across the country, community members now gather to connect and share ideas, experiences and resources with each other. Different local entrepreneurs are invited by the organizers of each event to give a short presentation of their company or business concept after which they each receive helpful feedback and support from their entrepreneurial peers.
According to their website, the 1 Million Cups program aims to “educate, engage and connect entrepreneurs to their communities” thus empowering them to persist in bringing their ideas to life.
