Google Fiber “arrives on July 26,” new KC video spot announces

Truman defeating Dewey. Satchel Paige firing a fastball. Charlie Parker playing bebop. The Google Fiber ad spot posted this morning on the Google Fiber Blog certainly pulls at Kansas City’s collective heart strings.

And, with the obligatory shot of a steaming stack of short ribs, it also activates the salivary glands.

But the 30-second spot also serves notice: something’s afoot on the Google Fiber front. Google Fiber, the commercial says, “arrives on July 26.”

After a long spell with no news from the search giant about the much ballyhooed debut of its ultra high-speed network in Kansas City, mention of a July 26 announcement should set the buzz machine in motion. But, beyond a date and the nebulous mention of an “announcement” about Fiber, which will provide internet connections to homes in Kansas City, Kan. and Kansas City, Mo. at speeds 100 times faster than high-speed broadband, Google isn’t saying much.

In a phone interview this morning, Google spokesperson Jenna Wandres declined to discuss specifics of the July 26 announcement — the agenda, who will be on hand — or delve into just what “arrives” means when it comes to Google Fiber. But she did offer this: “We’re excited to make an announcement about Google Fiber next week.”

As for that commercial spot — which, I’ll mention in the interest of shameless self-promotion, features photos of the Silicon Prairie News team — it’s both an announcement and a “thank you” to Kansas City.

“We’re really excited to be a part of Kansas City’s story,” Wandres said. “We’ve now been on the ground for a little over a year, and we love being a part of the community.”

Stay tuned for more on the July 26 announcement as we learn about it.
