For 52 hours from March 22–24, technologists will be asked to dream up uses for Kansas City’s gigabit internet connection.

The occasion, the first Hacking the Gigabit City event, is being organized by Mozilla, the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, US Ignite and KC Digital Drive.

Dinner, drinks and a rapid-fire pitch session kick off the free event March 22, at which time teams form for the weekend. The next two days will be devoted to executing selected ideas, with the weekend’s results demonstrated Sunday night. The Google Fiber Space hosts the opening and closing days, but Saturday’s work session will take place in Kauffman Labs.

Work done over the weekend could evolve into a submission to the Mozilla Ignite Challenge, according to the event’s website. The competition, which will award one team $250,000, requires projects be completed by April 3.
