Big KC: Meet Marc Hemeon, designer behind Google’s biggest projects

Since the 2011 acquisition, Hemeon has influenced some of Google’s largest projects to date and quickly became a sought-after designer. He led YouTube’s 2012 sitewide redesign. He has since worked on design for Chromecast, Google Analytics and Google X’s self driving car project. Just last month, Google Ventures named him Entrepreneur in Residence.

We’re heading into year two of Big Kansas City, and looking forward to sharing your stories and those of our speakers over the next few weeks. All of this wouldn’t be possible without our content partner, Pinsight Media+. They are a pioneer in mobile media with deep entrepreneurial roots. Their team brings leadership, experience and global awareness to Kansas City’s booming startup community. To learn more or talk with our friends at Pinsight, email Serge Bushman, sbushman@pinsightmedia.com.

Marc Hemeon Every man-made item was designed by someone. Design rules our lives and influences our daily decisions. If done correctly, we don’t even notice. This emotional explanation of design’s influence on our lives has been told time and time again. Marc Hemeon has a different way of putting it.

“You’re influencing my world, so don’t make it suck.”

Hemeon speaks through a smile, disarming audiences by surrounding sound insight with a healthy amount of self-deprecation. He presents himself with so much humility, you wouldn’t guess the number of worlds he’s influenced with his own design.

Over the last decade, he’s split time between leading design for well-established companies like Oakley and Digg, while founding startups like Tee Fury and Design by Humans.

The serial entrepreneur was onto his third venture when he co-founded fflick, a website that gathered Twitter data to review movies. The company was created by Hemeon and other former Digg employees, and was acquired by Google a few months after launch.

Since the 2011 acquisition, Hemeon has influenced some of Google’s largest projects to date and quickly became a sought-after designer. He led YouTube’s 2012 sitewide redesign, has worked on design for Chromecast, Google Analytics and Google X’s self-driving car project, and just last month, Google Ventures named him entrepreneur in residence.

In August, Hemeon announced he was working on a new project with Digg co-founder and Google Ventures partner Kevin Rose. The company, called North Technologies, is shrouded in mystery, but with Hemeon and Rose at the helm, the tech community will be watching closely.

Marc Hemeon is coming to Big KC in October. Join us for some of Marc’s real talk, and find out more on the event at bigkansascity.co.

Help us welcome him on Twitter @hemeon.
