In acquisition news, Hudl announced the purchase of Wyscout, an Italian based football (soccer) scouting company. The amount of the acquisition was not disclosed.

In a previous round of financing, Wyscout raised $3mm on a convertible note at a $25mm pre-money valuation in 2014 (Crunchbase). In this April 2019 article in Forbes, Wyscout reportedly has an annual revenue of $13mm per year, over 500 employees, and an annual growth rate of 20%.  So, despite imperfect information, it appears that this is Hudl’s largest acquisition to date.

According to the Hudl press release, “Wyscout provides the largest database of football video and data, including over 550,000 players profiles and more than 200 leagues and championships. Founded in 2004 in Chiavari (Italy), Wyscout has revolutionized recruitment processes and propelled football development by providing matches analyzed action-by-action and delivering user-friendly tools to enhance performance analysis, coaching and scouting activities, and connecting the football community globally.”

According to John Wirtz, Hudl’s Chief Product Officer, “Hudl and Wyscout coming together means coaches, analysts and the football community will have unprecedented access to all the video and data they need to drive improvement and unearth talent from all over the world. And they’ll have all of this at their fingertips, which lets them focus on their core roles, not navigating across multiple systems. It’s going to dramatically change lives.”

Hudl dominates the sports video analysis market for football (American) in the United States at the NFL, NCAA, and high school level. The company has recently been acquiring companies in other sports to improve and solidify their share in these markets.  For example, Hudl recently acquired two companies, Krossover (Basketball) and VolleyMetrics (Volleyball). The Wyscout acquisition significantly improves their position in the global soccer market – and this is a huge market.

Football (soccer) is the most popular sport in the world and the number one sport in many countries. The revenue from the top five football leagues in Europe will surpass $20B in the next five years and offers significant growth opportunities for Hudl.
