Two Omaha bitcoin startups hope to create a greater awareness of the digital currency around the city Sept. 15.
It’s the first annual Bitcoin Day Omaha, a half-day event in the Old Market where attendees will learn about bitcoin, get a bitcoin wallet setup and even go on a scavenger hunt to local businesses where attendees can win prizes.
Alpha Bitcoin, a company aiming to increase awareness and help businesses integrate bitcoin into their operations, and BlockchainIO, a bitcoin consulting outfit, are putting on the free event that runs from 2-9 p.m.

The day also includes free educational sessions, a demonstration of bitcoin mining, a cocktail and networking hour and a chance at prizes including the bitcoin car, a 2014 Kia Soul.
The event will be on the third floor of Blue Sushi, 416 S. 12th St.
Mini-seminars, covering bitcoin basics, legal aspects of bitcoin, how to download and protect a mobile wallet, and opportunities to practice transactions with bitcoin kick off at 2 p.m. The scavenger hunt begins at 5 p.m. Contestants will search the Old Market for bitcoin QR codes to win prizes.
After the race, attendees return to Blue Sushi for cocktails, networking and reveal the first bitcoin ATM in Omaha.
