Entrepreneurship Index still shows bias to coasts, but Prairie catching up

Economists at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln published the results of their annual State Entrepreneurship Index last week. Though co-author Eric Thompson admitted the index reinforces a long-standing bias towards the east and west coasts, he said prairie states like Iowa and Nebraska ranked well. “I have to confess that it does reinforce this stereotype, this predilection that some people have toward opportunity on the coasts,” he said. “But the index is also saying there’s plenty of opportunity and things going on here, too.” Iowa came in at 11th while Nebraska ranks at 18th and Missouri at 35th.   read more

Raikes Design Studio students share project challenges, next steps

UNL Mobile Media Lab picks up $200k Knight Foundation grant

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln's new Mobile Media Lab is the recipient of a $200,000 grant from the Knight Foundation, the institution announced Thursday. Gary Kebbel, who joined UNL's journalism college in 2010, is spearheading the program. "(The Mobile Media Lab) will seek innovative and effective uses of mobile media and then publicize those ideas and best practices," Kebbel, whose resume includes a five-year stint at Knight, said on his blog. UNL Drone Journalism Lab lifts off with stories on Nebraska’s drought

The Drone Journalism Lab, a University of Nebraska-Lincoln endeavor that we reported received a Knight Prototype grant in June, has published its first drone-assisted stories. Using a small, unmanned aerial vehicle, the lab produced a video (above) and written report on this year's drought in Nebraska.
