Following in the wake of yesterday’s morning launchZaarly activity was brisk throughout the Silicon Prairie. One of the most unique listings was a call for evening entertainment in the Dwolla headquarters in downtown Des Moines. Dwolla fielded several offers for what the startup deemed “Dwollapalooza” and ultimately chose a solo performance by Jason Walsmith of The Nadas (see our post The Nadas’ year-long recording project reaches completion).

Walsmith set up his guitar on an impromptu stage – four carpet squares – in between the desks and folding tables that serve as workspace for the Dwolla team. In what had to be one of the more peculiar shows of Walsmith’s career, he joked that it was his first time playing the Midland Building, an office building known historically for being the home to the Polk County Attorney and multiple law firms and more recently for housing several startups. He also commented on the walls painted in whiteboard paint and two of the Dwolla development team who kept programming, with their noise-cancelling headphones in place, throughout the show.

Walsmith played to the crowd of around 20, comprised mostly of members in the startup community downtown, for over 45 minutes.

A tweet from Ben McDougal, an attendee at Dwollapalooza, describing the situation well.
