Infographics are all the rage, and in the coming months, the team at 9 Clouds hopes to capitalize on their popularity with the infographics company, Lemonly.

Defined by Wikipedia as a “graphic visual representations of information, data or knowledge,” they’ve been popping up everywhere lately: news headlines, daily blogs, company blogsblog categories and business plans. In fact, it’s one startup‘s core purpose to help users explore, share and create infographics and data visualizations.

In the Silicon Prairie, however, we have yet to see the use of infographics take off — or, as they say, hockey stick. Most recently, Dwolla used one to celebrate its $1 million in transactions per day milestone, and before that, Zaarly used one for a milestone, as well, celebrating $1 million in jobs posted. While Dwolla created its infographic in-house, Zaarly worked with another Silicon Prairie company, Sioux Falls, S.D.-based social marketing firm 9 Clouds, to create an infographic that was first revealed in TechCrunch post.

“After teaming up with Zaarly on their TechCrunch infographic as well as some internal 9 Clouds projects, we’ve seen a great opportunity in infographic design,” John Meyer, 9 Clouds co-founder and chief creative officer, said in a recent email interview.

Meyer, who’s also a contributor for Silicon Prairie News, is now preparing to launch Lemonly, a company under 9 Clouds that will specialize in visual marketing through infographics and data visualizations.

“We’ve already got some great clients lined up as well as some amazingly talented freelance graphic designers from around the Silicon Prairie,” Meyer said.

Outside of that upcoming client work, Lemonly has been showing off its skills with interesting infographics, such as ones looking at the use of Facebook and LinkedIn in the Midwest and one presenting an “all-star” lineup of social media websites around the time of the MLB playoffs.

Another recent infographic of theirs featured a rundown of the Harry Potter series and was published around the release of the final Potter film on July 15.

“To capture Potter excitement we created a unique video infographic that combined a visual summary of the first seven Harry Potter films plus an embedded trailer of all the films,” Meyer said, adding that this infographic was spearheaded by 9 Clouds design lead Amy Colgan, a devoted “Potterhead.”

“Thanks to the new infographic community, Visual.ly, and our 9 Clouds blog,” Meyer said, “we’ve seen over 4,000 views on this graphic.”

As the infographic craze begins to hit the Silicon Prairie, it’ll be interesting to watch how many Lemonly squeezes out.
