We’re woefully behind on getting the word out about this, but today the Social Media Club of Kansas City (SMCKC) is bringing together thought leaders from around the community for Building the Gigabit City, a daylong brainstorming session, facilitated by The Brainzooming Group, about how the gigabit speed home internet Google is bringing to Kansas City can transform the community.

The mission of the Gigabity City initiative is to lay a framework of ideas on which businesses and individuals can develop opportunities on the social web within the Kansas City community. The fruits of today’s labor will be shared at a reception tonight from 6-8 p.m. at the Central Library (14 W. 10th St.).
Aaron Deacon, who serves on the SMCKC board, said in an email last week that the organization expected 75-80 civic and business leaders and entrepreneurs to attend today’s event, at which the aim is to produce 25-50 concepts for publication as open-source seeds for innovation around the Google Fiber opportunity.

Today’s event is bringing together a good sampling of the Kansas City community in another effort to optimize the ultra high-speed internet service that will be available soon thanks to Google Fiber. Google announced this spring Kansas City was the recipient of its high-speed service, which is up to 100 times faster than the high-speed internet in most homes.
“The Bistate Innovation team has been engaged, Google has been engaged,” Deacon said, “attendees include people pretty plugged into the entrepreneurship scene … as well as from the corporate side.”
Attendees at this evening’s reception can hear a preliminary recap of the day’s sessions and join the conversation about what Google Fiber might mean for Kansas City. A public reception begins at 6:00 pm, and the program starts at 6:30.
