The team convenes for its monthly all-hands meeting for September—this time at the Omaha office.

Sunday Funday takes on a bit different meaning these days. Still a lot of football, but a little less libation and a whole lot more pen and paper. With our recent introduction of weekly Monday strategy sessions, Sunday prep has become a valuable part of the routine. Important milestones to reach during the week? Desired key takeaways from each meeting? Working through each of these questions has become critical, and recently I was reminded, by Abraham Lincoln, why this most basic exercise is so important: “The future comes one day at a time.” You can dream big, but unless accompanied by hard work, every day, it’s only a dream.

So as our team’s Monday morning discussion unfolded, it was done so within a framework that places value on each day as we build toward our next steps. We’re looking at the new year as a marker for bigger aspirations, but it will take every one of the days over these next three-plus months—last Monday was day one of 106—to make them realized. We now have 100 days to execute on the fundamentals that are the foundation of Silicon Prairie News. We’re working to get the basics right, consistently, as we build toward a big dream of ours that looks out across the Midwest.

So what are the basics? Developing an understanding of our “why” and how that translates into “what” we do was our first step. Staying grounded as a team to the “why” and brainstorming the “what” has been, like any startup, a roller-coaster of highs and lows, but I’m confident we’re headed in the right direction. I’m especially excited for our work to grow the capacity of our newsroom—greater consistency with series, expanding coverage to smaller cities, covering the topics and stories you want to hear about—and the strategies that strengthen our voice within the community and provide insight behind the scenes of SPN.

A revamped company blog and active Instagram accounts show new ways we’re connecting.

When we’re out and about in our cities, we’re keeping you informed of where we’ll be and we’ll be sharing what we’re doing at SPN now more than ever before. When we talk about community needs, we’ll have more experience to understand and best support those needs through our content and events. It’s a more mindful, intentional and in-depth way to connect with you, our community. Plus, it’s a fun way for us to introduce you to our company culture and quirky humor. If you haven’t already, follow along with us.
