Whenever a sale falls though, it’s awkward for both the customer and the salesperson. That lost sale can be a waste of time and money.

Matt Warner, owner of Empire Fence & Netting in Lincoln, had grown tired of losing out on possible sales. That is, until he thought of a solution. Partnering with Beehive Industries, he developed an application that helps sort out the wheat from the chaff, metaphorically speaking.

MySalesman is a tool that allows prospective customers to decide exactly what type of fence they want. Like other services that come with variable costs, sometimes customers aren’t quite sure what they’re getting into. Add in the cost of raw materials, gates and various types of fencing, and the possible price range grows significantly.

With mySalesman, all of the logistics are worked out ahead of time on the app.

“Whatever they want, all they have to do is click,” Jayme Pavel, mySalesman’s sales lead, told Silicon Prairie News.

Customers locate their home on a map, use a drawing tool to sketch out exactly what they want and create a customized fence. Once this is complete, the customers get a price estimate for the project.

“After adding up the expenses of fuel and time spent on these unsuccessful leads, I decided I wanted to develop a way for customers to get a budget on their own,” Warner said. “A simple way for them to explore different fence options while being in the comfort of their own home, with the ultimate goal of qualifying every lead.”

Pavel estimated roughly 10 sales leads per week would fall through for Warner, but with the new app somewhere between 60 and 80 percent of sales leads end successfully.

The project has been in development for more than three years, over which time Warner partnered with Beehive Industries to turn his idea into reality. He is a self-described dreamer, but had limited knowledge of how to develop this web application. During the development process, Warner said developers at Beehive helped “pick his brain” to conceive of the best product.

Beehive founder Bill Sheldon says the app has been made fully customizable, meaning any fencing company can use the application. This has paid off for Warner, as 30 fencing companies currently use the app.

“The fencing industry is one that can be improved by technology,” Warner said.

Looking ahead, the mySalesman team wants to expand its user base. By March, Pavel said, new estimating software—called myEstimate—will be added to the application. Still, Warner said these applications will never be truly complete.

“I’m a dreamer,” Warner said. “I’ll keep waking up in the middle of the night with the next great idea.”
