Interruptions are the sole distraction of creativity in the workplace, causing Corporate America to work longer hours outside of the office and often times, forcing work to be completed on the weekends.
No matter how much coffee you drink or how much sleep you’ve acquired to prepare yourself for a productive work day, 37signals co-founder Jason Fried says this is how the workplace is meant to be structured. Fried, however, is defying the odds by using his company’s web-based applications, such as Campfire, a real-time collaborative group chat application, as well as using quality to drive productivity rather than a hierarchy.
Fried co-founded 37signals in 1999 originally as a web-design firm. The company turned to web-based software development in 2005, offering clients an easier way to collaborate, share ideas and discuss company projects while getting work done.
While he suggests eliminating in-office collaboration, Fried offers an interesting take on the development of the workplace, how managers strive to drive distractions among their employees and how dubbing your company’s product as the leader will provoke productivity.
