A few weeks ago, we interviewed Adrian Blake, CEO of TownCommons.com (see: Adrian Blake of TownCommons.com, a ‘Google News for local events’).

Today, we have some additional footage of Adrian giving us his thoughts on the Omaha startup scene. As was mentioned in the previous piece, Adrian comes to Omaha after having worked all over the world, and he brings a unique perspective to this dialogue of what is necessary to have a great startup community.

Here's an outline of Blake's thoughts:

  • To have a startup community, you need three things: talent, money, customers.
  • Enough talent? Tons of technical talent in the metro area. Maybe not all know they.
  • Is there money in Omaha? Tons of prosperous people in Omaha. The money isn't always in the position of knowing they want to be angels.
  • Customers? Omaha works as a test market for consumer products, because it looks a lot like the rest of America.
  • Starting a bleeding edge company for geeks? Omaha maybe isn't the best.
  • For mainstream products, there's no better place to talk to real people leading real lives.
  • Need to do a better job of getting tech-oriented people fired up about starting companies.
  • Need to do a better job of convincing prosperous people in Omaha that they should be backing companies.
  • Miles ahead of similar-sized markets.
