The Midwest isn’t flyover country. That’s why one group is chugging through via rail this week.

The Millennial Trains Project rolls into Omaha Tuesday morning, carrying aboard 30-40 millennial entrepreneurs. The project likens itself to “the ghost of Jack Kerouac staying up all night with the spirit of Steve Jobs.” That is, traveling and entrepreneurship go hand in hand.

Inspired by the Jagriti Yatra in India, the 10-day journey takes young entrepreneurs across the United States by train from San Francisco to Washington D.C., stopping in seven cities along the way.

Passengers must have crowdfunded $5,000 to gain a seat. At each whistle stop, the riders hop off and explore the community, engaging with other millennials as well as local civic leaders and entrepreneurs. The goal is to move forward projects promoting civic development, economic growth or social change.

The group travels by night, collaborating and receiving lectures from accomplished mentors from the Associated Press, National Geographic and Harvard, just to name a few. It’s part mobile classroom/part real time idea incubator.

Idea Mornings—one of the “New Pioneers”—on Tuesday is hosting a free breakfast talk at KANEKO from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Based in Louisville, Ky., Idea Mornings is a community engagement project similar to 1 Million Cups, which gathers local entrepreneurs, designers and creatives to hear a distinguished speaker. Tomorrow’s presenter will be Anne Trumble of Emerging Terrain. Check the event listing for changes or updates.
