Dwolla hosts students for the Startup Job Crawl in September. In December, it will host designers and developers for its inaugural Old MacDonald Hackathon.

Sillicon Prairie News is teaming up with Dwolla to help the Des Moines-based payments startup hold its first hackathon in The Prairie.

Titled Old MacDonald Hackathon – yes, after that famous man who had a farm – the event takes place Dec. 1-2 and is part of the startup’s two-year anniversary celebration, a milestone being marked with a meetup Nov. 30.

Designers and developers are invited to Dwolla’s downtown Des Moines headquarters Dec. 1 to begin building an app in less than 27 hours. Teams that incorporate the Dwolla API will compete for one of three prizes – er, farm animals – a cow, a pig and a rooster.

The goal of the event is for the local community to come out and have fun, Dwolla communications director Jordan Lampe said in a phone call today. With the use of its API and employees expected to be among the teams, Dwolla also hopes to see “something cool” built that affects the way money is moved.

Silicon Prairie News is helping to highlight the hackathon with coverage on this blog. Our events team is assisting with planning and execution. Dwolla, who held a 200-plus participant hackathon in New York in August, is spearheading the event.

Tickets, available to the first 50 designers and developers, are free and can be found on event’s website. More details – including how the cow, pig and rooster will be delivered – will be announced by Dwolla in the coming weeks.
