Lately, we’ve been regularly asked, “How do I get my startup covered by the media?” When asked, it isn’t only directed at our coverage; individuals are looking for advice on how to get attention from many, whether its traditional media, such as the Des Moines Register, tech blogs, such as TechCrunch, or other niche outlets, such as political blogs.
We’re working on a number of posts to share our tips and we’ll be inviting guest authors to add to the conversation, as well. For example, you’ll be hearing from public relations individuals who have a main responsibility of getting companies covered by the media.
On the topic today, we have a short clip from a talk given at Standford University by entrepreneur, investor and best-selling author Guy Kawasaki. The hour-long talk, titled “Creating Enchantment,” recaps his most recent book “Enchantment: The Art of Changing Hearts, Minds, and Actions,” but the part we’d like to share is one that stresses the importance of story telling when pitching a startup.
“You need to tell a story,” Kawasaki says, “most people, particularly at technology, are horrible at telling stories.”
