You have to appreciate someone who can go with the flow, right? Well, that was my thought a few weeks ago when I addressed our intern applicant Frank Merchlewitz by “Fred” in a text. “The name’s Frank, by the way,” he kindly replied. (Fred is, of course, the name of our Kansas City editor.)
Now a couple of weeks into his role as summer editorial intern, I (and others) have embarrasingly made the mishap a few times. Frank, on the other hand, has impressed us by keeping it cool and quickly fitting into our growing newsroom team.
Frank comes to us from Drake University, where he’s a senior writing and radio/television production double major. He’s on track to finish early in December and after graduation he told us he’d like to land somewhere where he can “make things for the Internet”—this fall he’ll take his first web development class.
“Startups in the Silicon Prairie represent a fascinating, fast-growing community of entrepreneurs creating the future of the Midwest,” he wrote in his application.

Fun Frank Fact: Frank moonlights as a jazz pianist and his combo plays every other Tuesday at The Lift in downtown Des Moines.
