The Silicon Prairie Awards are the one night a year that entrepreneurs can put away the hoodies and sneakers and really style it up. This is a black tie, formal affair, so feel free to Rent the Runway or do The Black Tux. Or simply find a way to take your current wardrobe to the next level. Don’t worry about a dress code. The important thing is to be yourself at your best.

To that end, we’ve asked a couple of our favorite fashion startups in the region to give their best advice for formal occasions:

For Women: “Black tie does not necessarily mean just black”

“Black tie for women does not necessarily mean floor length dresses,” said Megan Hunt, co-founder of Hello Holiday in Omaha. “Cocktail length is fine, color is fine, unusual fabrics are awesome. To me, it’s a time to showcase luxurious textiles (maybe collected from a vintage store or handed down from your cool aunt?), a bit of bling and sleek sophistication.”

And don’t think that formal means you can’t use color.

“Black tie also does not necessarily mean just black. Formal events are the perfect time to experiment with color by incorporating it into an accessory—maybe a statement cuff, an unusual bag, or a shoe. We have several unique, blinged-out evening bags now in unusual shapes (red lips, an eyeball with a teardrop zipper pull) at Hello Holiday, handmade for us in London,” said Hunt.

Hunt also suggests considering a new trend in formal dress: menswear for women.

“If you’re not the type to wear a dress, embrace a women’s tuxedo,” Hunt said. “A well-tailored satin tuxedo jacket is a super versatile piece for all women to have in their wardrobes, and there are so many ways to make them look sexy. You can add a heel to a women’s tuxedo, unbutton the collar a bit, or femme it up with a bold lip or an updo with soft curls. Menswear for women has been on red carpets more and more over the past few years, and when tailored well, it’s just as formal and elegant as any gown.

The key, according to Hunt, is to find the right fit.

“Most importantly, wear something that fits you. When fit and proportion are in harmony, you will always look amazing,” said Hunt.

For Men: “Don’t be afraid to accessorize”

The Style Advisors over at Men’s Style Lab in Des Moines offer some “pro tips” for men looking to impress. First, find a jacket this fits.

“Look for a two-button jacket,” they said. “This will make you look more slimming and taller. Also, it’s all about fit! Your jacket should skim your shoulders, nip in at the waist, and be long enough to cover your backside. Your trousers should be trim, and hemmed properly, but not so narrow and short that it looks like you’ve forgotten them in the dryer!”

Next, mix and match patterns to make an original statement.

“Don’t be afraid to mix patterns for your formal look! Pin-stripes with polka-dots? Why not– Start with micro-prints and similar colored patterns for a subtle yet interesting arrangement. For example, a unique pair of socks with a bold tie, or a pin stripe shirt with a micro-print blazer. The options are endless.”

“The options are endless”

Adding an accessory is a superb way to express your identity even on a formal occasion.

“Don’t be scared to accessorize! Accessories are a great way to add a pop of color, spice up your old suit, and show your personality,” Men’s Style Lab said. “For example, try adding a lapel pin or a printed pocket square to your jacket. Funky socks are another a great way to show character and add a fun pop to an otherwise formal outfit. Also- don’t forget to top the look off with a great bag!”

Confused on shoes? Try the Oxford.

“The Oxford is the most basic and timeless of the dress shoes, and a great starting point if you’re looking for a classic staple,” said the Style Advisors. “They are very versatile option that can be dressed up with formal wear or down for a more casual setting. Remember when you’re lacing up those shoes, don’t forget the matching belt!”

One more thing, according to Men’s Style Lab, “Don’t forget your confidence!”
