Earlier this month a new podcast began out of the office of Lava Row, a social media firm based in Des Moines’ East Village. Recently, I had the chance to catch up with Nathan T. Wright, Lava Row’s founder, to learn more about their entry into this medium.
SPN: Why did Lava Row decide to undertake a podcast this year?
Thanks to our sponsor
Nathan: Podcasting stood out to us as a painless, simple way to interview all the interesting people we meet at conferences and events in other cities. We can suddenly create useful content simply by recording a phone call with someone over Skype. Additionally, it was a medium we hadn’t yet explored and needed to understand better.
SPN: What is the theme for the Lava Row podcast and what are your goals for it?
Nathan: The goals (and overall theme) are to highlight people doing interesting things in the social media / new media space.
SPN: How will you know if the podcast is successful?
Nathan: Right now we are focusing on delivering good content and building an audience. We will gauge success by increased audience size and being able to consistently land high-quality guests.
SPN: What are your thoughts on the use of podcasting as a tool by the Des Moines entrepreneurial community?
Nathan: I know that a lot of people in Des Moines have experimented with podcasting in the past, but Andy Brudtkuhl and Doug Mitchell stand out as the ones who have aggressively gone after it for a sustained period of time with their Managing The Edge business podcast. They’ve had a lot of success with that. I’d love to see more Des Moines entrepreneurs get their voice out there (literally) by creating podcasts, and sticking to it over time.
The Lava Row podcast has kicked off strong with guests Patrick O’Keefe, author and founder of the iFroggy Network, Sarah Lacy, author and journalist, and Julia Rosien, director of communications at Natura World. You can access the podcast on the Lava Row blog or in iTunes.
