The Plains Angels, a Des Moines-based consortium of angel investors that came together in June last year, announced today it’s now offering an investor training program focused on due diligence.

“The intention is to inform everybody better of what due diligence is, what is good due diligence, how do you do it,” Mike Colwell (right), Plains Angels co-founder, said in a recent interview.

The training sessions are open to the public, but will be targeted towards new angels, he said. Videos of the sessions – there have been three since November – are posted on the group’s website.

Scheduled to be held in Des Moines on the fourth Thursday of every month, the next session, “Negotiating Terms / Group Investing,” is Feb. 28. Registration is $15. Future sessions, which will cover topics such as intellectual property and valuations, are listed on the group’s Tikly page.

Plains Angels, an intiative of the Greater Des Moines Partnership, meets monthly to hear two company pitches. The group now has more than 100 members, Colwell said. Participating accredited investors collaborate on due diligence but each makes their own investment decisions.

The group recently facilitated its second deal, participating in a round of funding secured by Carroll, Iowa-based Agren, an agriculture consulting firm. The group’s first deal, Colwell said, has not been disclosed.
