Thanks to a new entrepreneurial-minded event, Drake University students are getting a taste of what it takes to pitch and develop a business idea. Inspired by the hit ABC show “Shark Tank,” Drake Enactus, a nonprofit student group focused on business and entrepreneurship, has developed a new student pitch competition called Project Bulldog.
Student teams of two to four members will prepare a 10-minute presentation for the competition’s judges. Although it’s not a requirement, it’s preferred that ideas have a positive impact on the community—whether that community is hyper-local, state or national. Ideas also must be able to be funded for less than $1 million.
The competition will be held Saturday, Oct. 19, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. in Drake’s Sussman Theatre, located in the lower level of the Olmsted Center. The first-place team will be awarded $500, second place $250 and third place $150. An audience choice award also will be given for the competition, with the recipient winning $100.
Judges include Des Moines startup community leaders such as Bawte‘s John Jackovin, 1 Million Cups organizer Aaron Hoffman, Change CEO Dan Shipton, Torision Mobile‘s Christian Gurney and Milton Milloy of FxRedux Solutions.
