On July 7, Omaha, Lincoln and Sioux Falls residents will be unleashed on a respective citywide scavenger hunt for vinyl music. Their only ally? A series of hints on the Internet.

Unfound Sounds is one of Michael Todd‘s Omaha Code School projects, one he created with Ruby and jQuery.

“I needed to build a blog for class, but wanted to build something with a little more creativity and longevity,” Todd said. “Hopefully it builds community, too, but I think it’s just for fun.”

Todd, now an infographic and web designer at Sioux Falls’ Lemonly, used to be editor of local music site Hear Nebraska. He combined his love of local music and the Web for Unfound Sounds.

This site creates treasure hunts for good, local and national music on vinyl, he says. One vinyl will be hid at a local business in each of the three cities.

“We hide records in local businesses, then post an album review and hints for each hiding place,” Todd said. “If you know which business we’re detailing, go there and ask for the next step: the final clue pointing to the record’s exact location.”

He hopes Unfound Sounds brings attention to all things local, from businesses to music to community.

“I hope people discover new places, new local music and new people,” he said.

To begin the scavenger hunt, check back on the Unfound Sounds site on Monday, July 7 for the first hint. A hint will be posted everyday from Monday through Friday until someone finds the record.

“Members” can get a jump start on the scavenger hunt, by visiting one of the places where albums have been found (click album covers to see past locations), and asking an employee for a member card. You can log in with the card for an early hint on July 6.

This is the third iteration of Unfound Sounds. So far six people have found vinyl at six local businesses in Nebraska.
