For the last three years, StartupCity Des Moines has been a place for the central Iowa startup community to congregate and collaborate. Now, its organizers are calling the community together in the space one last time for a different purpose—to celebrate what’s been accomplished over those three years.

Join StartupCity Aug. 22 starting at 5 p.m. for food from Tacopocalypse, beer from Confluence Brewery and a chance to spend some more time in the space before it shuts its doors. And if you happen to dress like a pirate for the festivities (National Talk Like a Pirate Day is next month)? Startup City manager Danyelle Crowell says that’s fine, too.

And, by the numbers, there’s quite a bit to celebrate. Since StartupCity opened, it’s had more than 10 companies involved with the accelerator program, put on more than 50 educational events and hosted visitors from about 20 different countries.

In October 2011, StartupCity principals Tej Dhawan and Christian Renaud secured a three-year funding agreement from a number of local organizations, including the Polk County Board of Supervisors, Corporation for Economic Development, City of Des Moines, Iowa Department of Economic Development and the Greater Des Moines Partnership. The agreement, which will not be renewed, officially ends Sept. 30.

Until Aug. 31, StartupCity will be home to teams and remote workers from more than 15 companies. In the meantime, the last open co-working day will be this Thursday and beginning Aug. 15, StartupCity will move to limited hours. The space will be open to the public from 9-10 a.m. and 2:30-4:30 p.m. At the end of the month, current residents will disperse—some to Des Moines’ newest co-working space Gravitate and some elsewhere—and the space will be closed to the public. By the end of September, StartupCity will officially be closed.
