While many competitions and courses teach entrepreneurs to build business plans, the University of Iowa’s John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center for the second time will offer a program that helps early-stage companies take things one step further.

JPEC’s Venture School—a three-day workshop followed by four weekly meetings that assist entrepreneurs in creating, honing and executing on an effective business model—will begin Feb. 4 in Des Moines. The Venture School experience ends with a two-day wrap-up workshop and final presentations from each of the teams.

The first iteration of JPEC’s Venture School started this fall with seven teams from the area surrounding Iowa City, Iowa. Organizers say teams for the first event ranged from “highly technical and scientific ideas” from University of Iowa faculty to software technology created by students and members of the community.

Venture School organizers recommend applicants come to the program with an established team committed to developing an idea. Cost to reserve a spot in the second Venture School class is $500 per team, which is refunded on the completion of the program.
